Converting your Indian driving licence to a German one: the 6-month window

If you plan to drive in Germany, do not assume your Indian licence keeps working. There is a strict clock, and missing it means driving illegally. Here is exactly how the conversion (Umschreibung) works for Indians.

The one-line version: your Indian licence (with an official German translation/International Driving Permit) is valid for about 6 months after you establish residence. After that you must convert to a German licence, and because India is not on the full-recognition list, this usually means passing the German theory and practical driving tests. Start before the 6 months run out.

The 6-month rule

  • From when you officially settle (register your address, Anmeldung), your foreign licence is valid for roughly 6 months.
  • You can sometimes extend to 12 months in specific short-stay cases, but do not rely on it; treat 6 months as your deadline.
  • Carry an International Driving Permit or an official German translation of your Indian licence during that window.
After the window, your Indian licence is not valid to drive. Driving on an expired-validity foreign licence is treated as driving without a licence, a serious offence. Plan the conversion early.

Why India is the harder case

Germany has agreements with some countries that allow a near-automatic swap. India is generally not one of them for a full conversion, and the exact rules can depend on your German state (Bundesland) and sometimes which Indian state issued your licence. For most Indians, conversion means sitting the German tests.

What conversion typically involves

1

Apply at the Fuehrerscheinstelle

The local driving-licence authority. Bring your Indian licence, official translation, passport, residence registration, biometric photo, and an eyesight test certificate.

2

First aid course + eye test

A short, standard first-aid course (Erste Hilfe) and a vision test are required.

3

Theory test

A computer-based theory exam, available in English in many places. Study the official question pool.

4

Practical test

A driving test with an examiner. Most people take some lessons at a Fahrschule (driving school) first to learn German road rules and standards.

The honest cost

Getting a German licence via the test route is not cheap, between the Fahrschule lessons, test fees, first-aid course and translation, it can run several hundred to well over a thousand euros depending on how many lessons you need. Factor it into your budget only if you genuinely need to drive.

Do you even need to drive?

In most German cities you do not. Excellent public transport and the Deutschlandticket make a car unnecessary and expensive for many students. Convert only if your job, location or life really requires driving.

FAQ

How long can I drive on my Indian licence in Germany?

About 6 months after you establish residence, with an official translation or International Driving Permit. After that you must convert.

Can I just swap my Indian licence for a German one?

Generally no. India is not on the full-recognition list, so most Indians must pass the German theory and practical tests to convert.

Is the theory test available in English?

Yes, in many states the theory exam can be taken in English. The practical test is with a local examiner.
