When to book your flight to Germany (don't rush it)

Excited students often book flights the moment they get admission. Slow down. The order matters.

Book after your visa is approved

Do not buy a non-refundable ticket before your visa is granted. If your appointment slips or the decision takes longer, you lose the money. If you must show a travel plan earlier, use a refundable or flexible fare, or a flight reservation (not a paid ticket).

Timing the price

Once your visa is in hand, aim to book around 6 to 8 weeks before your semester. Mid-week departures and one stopover are usually cheaper than weekend direct flights. Watch the fare for a week before committing.

Arrive with a buffer

Land about 2 to 3 weeks before classes start. You will need that time for your address registration (Anmeldung), opening a bank account, activating insurance, and finding your feet. Arriving the day before lectures is a recipe for stress.

Baggage

Check your airline's student baggage allowance; some offer extra. Pack the India-cheap essentials and leave bulky winter gear and bedding to buy locally.
