Your first weeks are pure admin, and the order matters because each step unlocks the next. Land 2 to 3 weeks before classes so you have time.
1. Anmeldung (register your address)
Within a couple of weeks of arriving, register your address at the local Bürgeramt. You need your passport, a rental contract, and a confirmation from your landlord (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). You get a registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung). Almost everything else needs this, so book the appointment the moment you have an address.
2. Open a German bank account
You need a normal current account so your blocked account can release your monthly money to you. Many students use an online bank for speed; a traditional bank works too. You'll usually need your passport, Anmeldung, and enrolment certificate.
3. Activate your blocked account
Link your new current account to your blocked-account provider so the monthly amount (around €934 to €992) transfers to you. You cannot withdraw from the blocked account directly.
4. Get a SIM
A local SIM makes everything easier (appointments, deliveries, two-factor codes). Prepaid SIMs are cheap and easy to start with; you can switch to a contract later once your bank account is set up.
5. Enrol and finish insurance
Complete your university enrolment and make sure your health insurance is active; both are usually needed to get your student ID and start classes.
Do these five in order and the stressful part of arriving is basically done.
