Australia's appeal isn't just the degree, it's the structured work pathway during and after study. But the rules tightened in 2024-2025.
Working while you study
- Up to 48 hours per fortnight (any 14-day period) while your course is in session.
- Unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks.
- Master's by research and PhD students have no cap.
A fortnight is rolling, you can't bank hours by skipping one week and doubling up the next. Overworking breaches your visa.
After graduation: the Subclass 485
| Qualification | Typical duration |
|---|---|
| Bachelor's / coursework Master's | ~2 years |
| Research Master's / PhD | up to 3 years |
You must generally be under 35 at application, and the 485 now requires English of around IELTS 6.5.
The previous automatic two-year extensions for certain fields and regional study have been wound back, so don't assume bonus years.
To stay employable after the 485, you need: a course with real labour-market demand, work experience built up during study, and a plan for after the visa expires.
The 485 is a genuine opportunity, but it is temporary, it does not guarantee PR. Want help mapping a realistic study-to-work plan? Talk to an Australia mentor.
