Sweden's student route is a residence permit for studies, not a short visa, needed for any course over three months. You apply online to Migrationsverket after you're admitted and have paid your first tuition instalment.
What you need to apply
- Admission to a full-time programme
- First tuition instalment paid
- Proof of SEK 10,656/month (2026) maintenance for the study period
- Comprehensive health insurance (for courses under one year)
- Valid passport; permit can't exceed passport validity
Adult application fee: SEK 1,500 (waived for SI scholarship holders). Migrationsverket decides 75% of cases within roughly 2 months, apply early.
The new 2026 rules (permits from 11 June 2026)
- Work capped at 15 hrs/week during semesters (no cap June-August).
- Study progress required: 37.5 credits year one, 45/year after, fail and your permit can be revoked or not extended.
- Two completed semesters generally needed before switching to most other permits.
- Notify Migrationsverket of your address within 30 days.
After you graduate
You can apply for a residence permit to look for work or start a business for up to 12 months (doctoral graduates: 12-18 months from 11 June 2026). Apply before your study permit expires. Land a job and you can switch to a work permit.
Can I bring my spouse?
Yes, family members can apply, with added maintenance amounts (e.g. SEK 4,440/mo for a partner, SEK 2,664/mo per child in 2026).
