After Graduation: Ireland's Third Level Graduate Programme and Finding Work

The stay-back is Ireland's best feature for Indian students. The Third Level Graduate Programme lets you remain after graduating to look for and start graduate-level work on a Stamp 1G permission.

QualificationStay-back
Level 8 (bachelor's honours)Up to 12 months
Level 9/10 (master's / PhD)Up to 24 months (12 + renewable 12)
How it works
  • You apply within 6 months of receiving your final results.
  • You must hold a valid Stamp 2 and an up-to-date IRP.
  • On Stamp 1G you can work full-time (40 hrs/week), no employer sponsorship needed yet.
  • For Level 9+, the first 12 months can be renewed once for another 12.

The goal: convert to a work permit

Use the window to land a job that qualifies for a Critical Skills Employment Permit (for in-demand roles, tech, engineering, healthcare, finance, with a faster route to long-term residence) or a General Employment Permit.

Watch the clock and the cap

Total time as a student is capped, commonly 7 years, extended to 8 for Level 9+ graduates using this programme. Missing the 6-month deadline can cost you the whole stay-back.

To maximise your odds of staying
  • Start job-hunting before you graduate, Dublin tech/pharma hiring is competitive.
  • Target Critical Skills roles for the smoother long-term path.
  • Keep your IRP and registration current at all times.
Is 24 months really enough to settle?

For many it is, Critical Skills permit holders can move toward Stamp 4 (long-term residence) after a couple of years of employment. But it depends entirely on landing a qualifying job.
