PHASE 3 OF 9

Choose course & university

The right program matters more than the ranking. Choose for jobs and fit, not prestige.

What to expect

  • β€’Most public universities are free (semester fee only). Baden-WΓΌrttemberg charges ~€1,500/sem for non-EU.
  • β€’Two intakes: Winter (main, deadlines ~spring) and Summer (smaller, fewer courses).
  • β€’English-taught Master's are common in STEM/business; German-taught widens your options hugely.

The real difficulties

  • !Course names differ from India, read module lists, not just titles.
  • !Some 'universities' are private and expensive with weaker job signals, verify.

Best practices

  • βœ“Shortlist by job demand + module fit + city cost, in that order.
  • βœ“Check each program's exact admission requirements and whether APS is needed.
  • βœ“Consider other routes too: Ausbildung (vocational), dual study, public vs private.
  • βœ“Apply for a student dorm (Studentenwerk) as early as you can. Dorm rooms are the cheapest housing and the waiting lists are long.
  • βœ“Rent affects your budget more than tuition does. A smaller city can save you thousands a year.

What a paid agent would do here

  • β‚ΉSteers you toward universities and private colleges that pay them a referral fee.
  • β‚ΉPads your list with expensive 'safe' private options.

The truth: Your shortlist should be built on fit and job prospects, not on who pays the agent a commission.
