Sweden's deal for graduates is quietly decent: finish your degree, get up to 12 months of residence to look for work or start a company, and if you land a proper job, switch to a work permit that leads to permanent residence. Here is how each step works, with the honest caveats.
Step 1: the job-seeking permit
- Apply before your student permit expires, from inside Sweden, once you have your degree certificate or completed-studies proof.
- You need to show savings to support yourself for the period, health insurance if not covered, and a completed degree from a Swedish university.
- The permit allows working while you search, so part-time work can fund the search itself.
Step 2: the work permit
- Your employer applies based on a real job offer. The core requirement is a salary at or above the current threshold, which since 2023 has been tied to a share of Sweden's median salary and has been under political discussion since. Engineering, IT and other graduate roles typically clear it comfortably.
- The employer must have advertised the role and offer insurance and conditions matching collective agreements. Established employers handle this routinely, tiny startups sometimes stumble, ask directly.
Step 3: permanent residence, and the citizenship caveat
Permanent residence typically becomes possible after about four years of work-permit time within a seven-year window, with a self-support requirement. Citizenship currently requires five years of residence, but rules were being tightened in 2026, with longer residence and language and civics requirements moving through the system. Plan around permanent residence, treat citizenship timelines as uncertain.
What actually determines success
- Thesis projects and internships at companies convert to jobs. Choose a master's thesis hosted at a company whenever possible, it is Sweden's main graduate hiring pipeline.
- English-only jobs exist in tech and research, but Swedish at even A2-B1 dramatically widens your options and signals commitment.
- Stockholm, Gothenburg (automotive, Volvo ecosystem) and Lund-Malmö (deep tech) are the three job markets that matter for most Indian graduates.
Compare the pathway honestly with Germany's PR route if immigration certainty is your top priority. Costs and funding are in the Sweden money guide, and a mentor working in Sweden can tell you what the graduate market looks like in your field right now.
