On 29 June 2026, APS India and the German Embassy announced the biggest change to the Germany application process for Indian students since APS itself became mandatory in 2022. It is called the dMAT (Digital Master Test), a computer-based aptitude test run by g.a.s.t., and from the Summer Semester 2027 intake onwards it is a required part of the APS documentation for a large share of Indian master's applicants. This guide covers everything known as of July 2026: who must take it, who is exempt, the exact dates, the money, the format, and what to do about it this month.
What exactly is the dMAT?
The Digital Master Test is a standardised academic aptitude test developed by g.a.s.t. (the Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development), the same German body that runs TestDaF and TestAS. It does not test your engineering or commerce knowledge, it measures reasoning: the kind of logical, numerical and analytical thinking a German master's programme assumes you have.
Three things it is not, straight from the official FAQ:
- It does not replace APS document verification. Your degree documents are still checked exactly as before.
- It does not replace anabin recognition or university eligibility checks. A dMAT certificate cannot compensate for a degree that is not formally recognised.
- It is not TestAS. TestAS remains the separate test for bachelor's applicants. The dMAT is a new, additional test for master's applicants.
Who has to take it
The dMAT is required if all of the following apply to you:
- You are applying for a master's programme in Germany, and
- your previous degree falls within engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business or management, and
- your application relates to the Summer Semester 2027 intake or any later intake, and
- you started your APS process on or after 29 June 2026.
Yes, that covers the two biggest groups of Indian applicants by far: B.Tech and B.E. graduates heading for MS programmes, and B.Com, BBA and economics graduates heading for management and finance master's. That is exactly the point, these are the fields where German authorities want an extra quality signal.
For interdisciplinary degrees (Engineering Management, Business Analytics, Financial Technology and similar), APS India publishes an official classification list that decides whether your field counts as affected. Check the list rather than guessing.
Who is exempt
- Bachelor's applicants (TestAS rules for them are unchanged).
- PhD applicants.
- Applicants in officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or university partnership programmes.
- Master's applicants whose previous degree is outside the affected fields (pure sciences, arts, humanities, law, medicine and so on).
The transitional exemptions, check your dates
The cut-off is 29 June 2026. You are exempt under the transition rules if any of these is true:
- You completed your APS online registration before 29 June 2026, or
- you shipped your complete APS application documents before 29 June 2026, or
- you already hold an APS certificate from a completed procedure.
The timeline, in one table
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| 29 June 2026 | Announcement, registration opens on the g.a.s.t. portal, transition cut-off |
| 15 September 2026 | Registration closes for the first test sitting |
| 26 September 2026 | First dMAT test date across Indian test centres |
| 12 October 2026 | First certificates issued via the g.a.s.t. portal |
| Summer Semester 2027 | First intake where the dMAT is required in APS documentation |
Test centre cities announced so far: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune. Seats are allocated first come, first served, and the first sitting will be crowded, register early rather than perfectly.
What the test looks like
Based on the g.a.s.t. materials available at launch:
- Computer-based, at a licensed test centre, conducted in English, roughly 3.5 hours total.
- Single-choice questions (one correct answer per question).
- A Core Module of general cognitive and analytical reasoning across three subtests: think figure sequences and pattern recognition, numerical reasoning, and structured rule-based puzzles.
- A General Academic Module with applied problem-solving built around realistic academic scenarios and reading comprehension.
There is no subject syllabus. You cannot cram formulas for it, which is the design intent: it measures aptitude, not memorisation. Sample questions and format details live on the g.a.s.t. site and may evolve before your sitting, so work from their current materials when you prepare.
Scoring: the sentence that matters most
Straight from the official FAQ: a low dMAT score does not automatically lead to refusal of the APS certificate. There is no pass mark and no cut-off to clear.
What actually happens with your result:
- You receive a dMAT certificate from g.a.s.t., which you submit together with your APS application documents (you may also send your APS documents first and the dMAT certificate later, once it is issued).
- Your APS certificate will then show that you took the dMAT and include your result.
- Universities see the score on your APS certificate and weigh it however they choose. The dMAT does not guarantee admission, and a modest score does not forbid it, admission decisions remain fully with each university.
Honest read: even without a cut-off, this score follows your application everywhere. Treat it like a GRE you cannot hide, a strong result is a free signal boost for a mid-tier academic profile, and a careless result is a permanent footnote. Prepare properly.
What it costs
- Test fee: EUR 150 (roughly ₹16,000-17,000 at mid-2026 rates), paid to g.a.s.t. during registration.
- This is on top of the regular APS fee, so budget for both, plus travel to your nearest test-centre city if you are not in one.
How to register, step by step
Confirm you actually need it
Check your field against the affected list and the transition dates above on aps-india.de/dmat. If you registered for APS before 29 June 2026 or hold an APS certificate, you are done, no test.
Create your account on the g.a.s.t. portal
Registration runs through the g.a.s.t. system (gast.de), not through APS India. Use the same name spelling as your passport, exactly as you did for APS.
Pick a test centre and pay the EUR 150
Seats are first come, first served across the ten cities. Register the moment you are sure, deadlines close weeks before the test date (15 September 2026 for the first 26 September sitting).
Prepare for 4-6 weeks, aptitude style
Work through the official sample materials, then drill the genre: logical reasoning, number series, pattern recognition, data interpretation and timed reading comprehension. CAT, GRE and TestAS practice material covers the same muscle groups. Untimed intelligence is not the test, timed calm is.
Take the test, collect your certificate
Results and certificates come via the g.a.s.t. portal (from 12 October 2026 for the first sitting). Download and store the certificate with your APS documents.
Submit it with (or after) your APS application
The dMAT certificate joins your APS documentation. APS India explicitly allows submitting your APS documents first and forwarding the dMAT certificate once it arrives, useful if you are tight on university deadlines.
What this means for your plan
- Your APS timeline just grew by one to three months. Between registering, waiting for a seat, taking the test and receiving the certificate, Summer 2027 applicants should start the whole APS-plus-dMAT chain now, not in autumn. Our APS guide and APS how-to cover the base process.
- Deadlines stack. Summer 2027 university deadlines mostly fall between September 2026 and 15 January 2027, and uni-assist processing adds weeks on top. Map backwards from your earliest deadline and put the dMAT sitting as early as the calendar allows.
- Why this exists is worth understanding. Indian students are now Germany's largest international group at roughly 60,000, and the authorities have been tightening quality checks across the board, from agent-written SOPs being caught at visa interviews to the rising rejection numbers. The dMAT is the same trend in exam form: Germany is not closing the door, it is raising the bar for the most crowded fields. Prepared applicants benefit from that, because the noise gets filtered out.
- Do not let anyone sell you panic. Agencies will market dMAT crash courses at absurd prices within weeks. It is an aptitude test with free official samples and no syllabus. Structured self-practice plus a few timed mocks is a complete preparation.
Quick answers
I am applying for Winter Semester 2026/27. Do I need the dMAT?
No. Certificates only exist from 12 October 2026, so the requirement starts with Summer Semester 2027 intakes. But if your plan might slip a semester, factor the test in now.
I registered for APS in May 2026 but have not finished the process. Am I exempt?
If you completed your APS online registration before 29 June 2026, the transition exemption covers you. Keep proof of the registration date. When in doubt, email info@aps-india.de with your case.
My bachelor's is in computer applications (BCA) or science (B.Sc). Affected?
The named fields are engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business and management, and APS India publishes a classification list for borderline and interdisciplinary degrees. Check your exact degree title against that list on the official dMAT page rather than assuming either way.
Is there a minimum score I must reach?
No. There is no cut-off, and a low score does not automatically deny you the APS certificate. The score appears on your APS certificate and universities interpret it themselves.
Can I retake the dMAT?
Retake and validity policies were not fully published at launch. The certificate is expected to remain valid indefinitely once issued. Confirm current retake rules with g.a.s.t. (kontakt@gast.de) before banking on a second attempt.
Does the dMAT replace TestAS, anabin or uni-assist checks?
No, no and no. TestAS remains the bachelor's-level test, anabin recognition still applies, and universities and uni-assist still verify eligibility exactly as before. The dMAT sits alongside all of it, inside the APS documentation.
Does a great dMAT score guarantee admission?
No. Universities decide admissions independently. A strong score is a helpful signal on your APS certificate, nothing more, nothing less.
